My Favorite BJJ Video

This is my favorite BJJ video. Terry Hunt the guy in the red belt (also he is the white guy-so politically incorrect :) This is my favorite video because my buddy Terry is 20 years older than the guy he best. Terry is obviously exhausted and  at the end of what he could take. He toughed it out and used his technique and wrestling to beat this guy.

Hello. My name is Eric Hobaugh and I am a writer.  I have been writing since 2007 about MMA. If you Google my name and MMA you will see hundreds of articles and interviews I have written. More importantly, I study BJJ or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I am a two stripe white belt under Nick “Chewy” Albin. Chewy is a high level black belt under Renato Tavares of American Top Team. A nationally ranked Black Belt BJJ competitor, he is also an undefeated MMA fighter himself and also trains many successful fighters. He is full of technique and low on ego. Great guy and a great teacher. He is without a doubt the best grappler I have ever had the pleasure rolling with. If you are close to Louisville, Kentucky and are interested in studying BJJ, MMA, Boxing, Wrestling, or Crossfit….. then you should check out Derby City MMA. It is a large, but very laid back group of people training with very little ego.  They have world champions there and world class athletes and from the first time I walked in the glass doors I felt like I was a part of something really cool. The kids classes are about the coolest thing I have ever seen. I am the oldest regular training member of the gym. I hated that at first, but not since I cannot change it I have embraced that fact. I am not training at DCMMA for stripes or belts. I am there to get into shape and learn.

me and BMe and my son Brian

I started training with my son several years ago when Brian asked me to find a martial arts school and we found Terry Middleton’s Gym in New Albany, Indiana. Grand Master Jim Thomas presented Terry his 9th degree black belt in 2009. Terry is one of the greatest humans I have ever met. He has been training and studying martial arts for more than 40 years. In 1968 (the year of my birth) Terry joined the first Karate studio in southern Indiana. The studio was started by Bob Lomax. Harry Schneinder, and Leo Fields who had practiced the Martial Arts in the service. Terry attended every class and became the caretaker of the studio. If you are in Southern Indiana and want a safe and family oriented place to study Boxing,  Junior Judo, Karate, Kickboxercise, Kickboxing or MMA then please check Terry out.

Today, I also train at Porto de Carro in Floyds Knobs, Indiana. It is a small group of really great grapplers dedicated to being the best. Austin Linton is owner and an Instructor at Porto De Carro. He is a Brown Belt under Fabio Santos. He is not only my teacher there but a really great person. Love his gym and what he started with the help of his friends. Dalton Million is another instructor there and is among the best guys I have ever rolled with. He has won many tournaments and is known for his ability to compete and regularly beat fighters of any size. He has some great fights on Youtube. He is a Brown Belt under Fabio Santos as well. My main instructor there has been Brown Belt Jason Dempster. He is not only the smartest guy I know he is an excellent BJJ practitioner and teacher. Terry Hunt may well be the best Blue Belt over 40 (or under) in America. He trains there as well and is among the best grapplers I have been around. I am proud to say I am a member of this Gym.

I started this blog initially because I wanted to have my own MMA blog. I was writing for other sites and was not making money and I thought I could make arearnakedchoke.com a success. It was a success on some level, but I realized I could not do all the other things in my life and maintain a MMA blog and do it justice. After some soul searching I decided to convert it to a BJJ blog. So here goes. I will be posting one or two things a month from a writing standpoint and once a month or so I hope to do a reocurring segment called “On the Matt With………” Hopefully that will allow me to interview some high level grapplers and will not only be something cool to do, but be interesting to watch and read. I Call myself a “Grateful White belt.” I am sincerely just grateful just to be rolling.

Handshake and then fist bump. Go!
